How Money Mondays Started
This term has been used by many others before, but I didn’t actually start using it until my clients started to. One client decided she would use Monday to touch base with her money and it quickly caught on. As we worked together to build better financial habits, many of them started setting aside time on Mondays to check in on their money. Before long, they noticed how much it helped them feel prepared and in control.
It quickly caught on, and now a number of my clients have Money Monday blocked into their calendars every week. It’s become a key part of their financial routine, and I love seeing how this simple habit is making such a big impact.
What is Money Monday?
Money Monday is a designated time at the start of your week to check in with your personal and business finances. Think of it as a financial self-care routine—like meal prepping for your money. Instead of ignoring your finances until they become an emergency, you’re giving them a little attention upfront, making the rest of your week smoother.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, just 20–30 minutes can make a huge difference in how you feel about your money.
Why Mondays?
We often put off dealing with money because it feels stressful, but when we avoid it, the stress just builds. By setting aside a small window of time each Monday, you create a consistent habit that removes the anxiety of the unknown.
It also means you can plan your week with intention instead of reacting to financial surprises. You’ll feel empowered, organized, and in control—not just with your money, but with your entire week.
How to Do a Money Monday Check-In
Want to start your own Money Monday routine? Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Set a Time & Make It Enjoyable
Pick a time each Monday that works for you—morning, lunchtime, or even evening with a cup of tea. Pair it with something you enjoy, like listening to music, lighting a candle, or making your favorite drink.
Step 2: Review Where You Stand
Check your:
Bank account and credit balances
Pending payments or upcoming bills
Business income and expenses (if self-employed)
Awareness is key. Knowing what’s happening with your money helps you make informed decisions. . . but I know this can feel very hard at first.
Step 3: Plan for the Week
Decide on any financial to-dos, like:
Transferring money to savings
Paying upcoming bills or setting reminders
Planning irregular purchases like gifts or haircuts
Step 4: Set a Small Financial Goal
Each week, set one small, achievable financial goal. It could be as simple as:
Using cash instead of credit for the week ahead
Setting aside a small amount toward savings
Making a plan to tackle a bill or debt
Progress Over Perfection
If looking at your numbers feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. The goal of Money Mondays isn’t perfection—it’s progress. Over time, this small habit will help you feel more confident and in control of your money.
So, are you in? Start your first Money Monday next week, and let me know how it goes!
